How We Got Started

Beyond the Chutes began with curiosity. After being a guest on a podcast, Doug Simcox wanted to learn more about podcasting and started looking into recording equipment.

Then the NY State Rodeo Museum Facebook group came online. Doug recognized many of the people, rodeos, and places being shared. Those familiar names and memories sparked an idea: record the stories in the voices of the people who lived them.

In April 2023, we began recording in Doug’s kitchen. Sam Swearingen has been Doug’s partner from the beginning.

What We Do

We listen, record, and collect.

We give folks room to tell their stories—in their own voice, in their own way. We ask questions, listen, and get out of the way.

We also collect rodeo magazines, programs, photographs, and other archival materials. These collections hold names, faces, places, and moments that deserve to be remembered.

This is our museum: the stories people tell and the pieces of history they leave behind.

Why We Do It

You may not recognize their names. You may not find them in the record books. Their stories matter.

Everyone has a story. Beyond the Chutes gives folks a place to tell theirs—in their own voice, in their own way.

Our job is to listen, give them room, and get out of the way. The memories they choose to share, and the way they tell them, are what make these conversations worth preserving.

Welcome to Our Museum

A story told in someone’s own voice. A photograph with familiar faces. A rodeo program saved for decades. Each offers a way into the history of rodeo.

Here, we bring those pieces together. You may recognize a name, remember a place, or discover someone you’ve never heard of. Their stories matter. Everyone has a story.

Pull up a chair. There’s plenty to discover.
